School of Environmental and Biological Engineering

I. Introduction

In order to implement the national decision to speed up the cultivation and development of strategic emerging industries, Nanjing University of Science and Technology officially established School of Environmental and Biological Engineering on November 28, 2010 (“the School” for short) based on the former three disciplines, namely Environmental Science and Engineering, Bioengineering, and Radiation Protection and Environmental Protection. The School is committed to fostering high-quality and innovative talents in environmental and biological fields. It has 41 faculty members now, forming a team led by the selected members of Recruitment Program of Global Experts (1,000 Talents Program) and expert members of Discipline Review Group of the State Council. Besides, the faculty team also includes academic backbones such as the selected members of “New Century Talents Program” (first-level), Program for New Century Excellent Talents of Ministry of Education, Jiangsu Provincial 333 High-level Talents Cultivation Program (third-level), and Jiangsu Provincial Innovation Program (“Qing-Lan” Program) as well as doctorate recipients of famous universities at home and abroad. The School has 400+ undergraduates and 200+ graduate students.

  

The School has the first-class domestic platform for research, including National Engineering Center for Research and Promotion of Non-Protein Additive Technology, Ministry of Educations Research and Engineering Center for Chemical Pollution Control and Jiangsu Provincial Key University Laboratory for Chemical Pollution Control and Recycling. By closely focusing on the currently widespread concerns about environmental pollution, modern bioengineering, energy security and utilization, etc., the research orientation of the School mainly covers water pollution control and recycling, theory and technology for air pollution control, environmentally functional materials, radiation protection and environmental security, bio-sensing and biochip systems, modern microbial engineering, biological metabolic regulation, and genetic engineering. Many interdisciplinary research projects provide research platforms for all teachers, graduate students and research personnel from around the world. They can make use of the advanced instruments and equipment in these centers to do their research work.

  

The School always adheres to the principle of student-centered and personalized training of talents. Due to the reasonable teacher-student ratio, our students have more opportunities to get along with their teachers and participate in the research projects of interest. This gives students more chances to engage in research and exercise their research ability even during their undergraduate period, let alone for the graduate students. Our undergraduates have won awards for many times in National Undergraduate Curricular Academic Science and Technology Works Competition. The School encourages students to take elective courses of foreign universities, practice in domestic and foreign enterprises, and participate in social research, which lays a solid foundation for their future career.

II. Faculty and Research

Number of faculty: 41 teachers, including 30 persons with senior professional titles. 77% of the faculty members have doctoral degrees, and more than 60% have a background of studying abroad. A well-structured, collaborative and innovative team has been established.

  

Achievements: A number of teachers have respectively been awarded as the scholar of 1,000 Talents Program, Science & Technology Award for Chinese Youth, Outstanding Contributor for National Environmental Protection, Jiangsu Provincial Young and Middle-aged Expert with Prominent Contribution, New Century Talents Program (first-level), Program for New Century Excellent Talents of Ministry of Education, Jiangsu Provincial 333 High-level Talents Cultivation Program (third-level), and Jiangsu Qing-Lan Program etc.

  

The School has undertaken a number of significant projects funded by National High-tech R&D Program (863 Program), National Basic Research Program (973 Program), and National Natural Science Foundation, and its research funding continues to increase. Since 2008, the School has published more than 120 SCI articles on Angew.Chem. Int. Edit., J. Org. Chem, Macromol. Rapid Comm., Bioresource Technol., and J. Membrane Sci., etc. The School has won many national and provincial scientific and technological achievement awards such as the first-class prize of Sinopec Science and Technology Progress, second-class prize of Jiangsu Provincial Science and Technology Progress, and second-class prize of State Environmental Protection Science and Technology. In addition, the School actively cooperates with large enterprises to complete many industry-university-research programs and environmental protection and biological cooperative projects. This helps solve the technical problems enterprises faced, and results in higher popularity and influence at home and abroad.

  

III. Research Centers and Laboratories

The School has three departments, namely Environmental Science and Engineering, Bioengineering, and Radiation Protection and Environmental Protection. Its research centers and laboratories include Ministry of Educations Engineering Center for Chemical Pollution Control, Jiangsu Provincial Key University Laboratory for Chemical Pollution Control and Recycling, Jiangsu Provincial Engineering and Technology Center for Macromolecule Polymerization Foam Material, and Center for Research and Promotion of Non-Protein Additive Technology under the key promotion program of national scientific and technological achievements.

  

IV. Talents Training

By pursuing the philosophy of taking education as its foundation, the School is committed to creating an academic atmosphere full of strictness, relax and happiness, and helping students not only learn basic professional knowledge but also promote their all-around development. Based on these, the School provides the society with versatile professionals who are good at environment, biology and radiation protection.

  

Undergraduate education

The School has three undergraduate majors, and has an enrollment of more than 400 undergraduates.

  

Based on the philosophy of taking education as its foundation, the School performs the tutor system for undergraduates. Through tutors’ supervision, focused guidance, individualized and customized cultivation, the conditions for the emergence of outstanding talents will be created.

  

In the training of undergraduates, the School focuses on the strengthening of students’ basic education and the optimization of professional courses. It aims to not only improve the students’ ability in engineering design and practical operation, but also broaden their insights. In other words, the School strives to help students become global versatile talents with solid professional knowledge, great practical skills and the ability to quickly adapt to the society.

  

Graduate Education

The quality of graduate education marks the schooling level of a school. School of Environmental and Biological Engineering currently has 10 doctorial supervisors and 18 master tutors. In order to ensure the quality of graduate education, the School attaches great importance to the improvement of these tutors’ research and teaching, sending them to overseas universities and institutions for advanced studies.

  

The School provides graduate students with good places and conditions for scientific research. Monthly favorable assistantships and fellowships are available for their research. More learning and communication opportunities are provided for the graduate students to open their research ideas. Each year, the School invites a number of high-level domestic and foreign scholars to guide and communicate with the students. Besides, the School also selected and sends graduate students to conduct collaborative research in famous foreign universities for six months to one year.

  

In addition, by taking various forms such as seminars and lectures on academic theses for graduate students, the School helps them broaden their vision, inspire their thinking, and improve their academic communication ability and international level.

  

Education for Master of Engineering

The School has two fields for Master of Engineering – Environmental Engineering and Bioengineering. It recruits Master of Engineering in environmental engineering, bioengineering, and radiation protection and environmental protection. The School aims to foster senior engineering technology and management talents who can engage in scientific research and development, engineering design and implementation, technology research and innovation, new technology promotion and application, project planning and management, etc. These talents can carry out innovative research with close connection to practical projects.

The School has established partnership with a number of enterprises and institutions for professional training, which involves the training on environment, biology and radiation protection.
