NJUST Students Won the First Prize of 2019 Chinese Collegiate Computing Competition

One July 17-21, the 2019 national finals of the 2019 (12th) Chinese Collegiate Computing Competition (CCCC) were held in Changchun, Jilin province. After intense expert evaluations and defense, the NJUST team “Style Caption” from School of Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) won the first prize of “AI/Digital Media” group.


CCCC, sponsored by the Higher Education Teaching Guidance Committee of Computer Course of the Ministry of Education, aims to comprehensively improve undergraduate teaching quality and promote the basic computer education. The competition attracted 830 entries from 320 universities, including Harbin Institute of Technology, Wuhan university and Tongji university.


“Style Caption” team consists of Deng Jingzheng, Lai Shuichang from CSE and Wu Wei from School of Electronic & Optical Engineering. Under the guidance of Prof. Gong Chen from CSE, this team, which is composed of all undergraduates, has independently completed their entry “Multi-style Image Description Generation Model Based on Deep Learning” in more than a year.


This project focuses on the problem of image description generation in the field of computer vision, which not only fills the research gap in this field at present, but also has high application value. In May this year, the project won the first prize of Jiangsu Division of the Computer Design Competition and was recommended to participate in the national competition. The project has been approved as the 2018 Industry-University Cooperative Education Project of the Ministry of Education, which also has received funding and support from Google.


The outstanding performance of students of CSE in the competition benefited from a series of measures of CSE such as curriculum design and scientific research training in recent years. These new measures have stimulated students’ interest in learning computer knowledge and skills, cultivated their innovative ability and teamwork awareness, and improved their comprehensive practical ability to solve practical problems by using information technology.
