2021 National Symposium on Amorphous Physics and Materials Concluded in Nanjing

From April 27 to 30, 2021, the 3rd National Symposium on Amorphous Physics and Materials, hosted by the School of Materials Science and Engineering/ Herbert Gleiter Institute of Nanoscience, NJUST, was held in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province.

A total of 289 experts and scholars from more than 50 well-known universities, research institutes and enterprises were invited to attend this conference. Those institutes include: Institute of Metals, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Ningbo Institute of Materials, Tsinghua University, Peking University, City University of Hong Kong, University of Münster, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, etc,

The opening ceremony of the conference was hosted by Prof. Chen Guang and Prof. Lan Si from the School of Materials Science and Engineering/ Herbert Gleiter Institute of Nanoscience. Assistant to the President He Yong delivered a welcome speech and expressed a warm welcome to the experts and scholars.

At the conference, Academician Wang Weihua from Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences gave a conference report on "New Advances in Fracture Mechanism of Amorphous Alloys". Then more than ten famous scholars such as Prof. Yao Kefu (Tsinghua University) and Prof. Li Yi (Institute of Metals, Chinese Academy of Sciences) gave wonderful academic reports.

In addition, the conference also initiated an international online special session, in which Academician T.C. Liu (City University of Hong Kong), Academician Harald Fuchs (University of Münster), Academician Horst Hahn (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany), Professor Gerhard Wilde (University of Münster), Professor Yilong Han (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology), etc. all contributed to the conference with wonderful reports.

During the conference, 94 presentations had been made, covering almost all the hot topics in the field of amorphous physics and materials, including characterization and regulation of microstructure and energy states of amorphous materials, optimization of mechanical, soft magnetic and catalytic properties of amorphous alloys, research on forming and processing technologies of amorphous alloys, computational simulations related to amorphous materials, structural phase transformation of liquid metals, industrial development of amorphous, etc.

Finally, academician Weihua Wang summarized the conference and gave four suggestions to all the participating experts and scholars: first, keep inventing and optimizing advanced production processes to improve the formation capability of amorphous alloys; second, besides mechanical properties, attention should be paid to the functional properties of amorphous alloys to seize new opportunities brought by industrial upgrading; third, pay attention to disciplinary crossover and give full play to the natural advantages of multidisciplinary integration of amorphous materials; fourth, do not simply follow foreign research hotspots and explore the path of independent innovation from practical applications.

The conference also held a poster selection activity. The evaluation committee scored 39 candidate works. One first prize, two second prizes, three third prizes and 12 excellent prizes were selected.

The conference explored the blueprint for the future development of the field of amorphous materials, providing a platform for the exchange of academic ideas among outstanding experts and scholars as well as entrepreneurs from all over China,

It promoted the cross-fertilization between different disciplines and research fields. The conference fully demonstrates that China has strong technical reserves and talent resources in the field of amorphous materials, and also enhances the reputation of NJUST in materials disciplines at home and abroad.
